This is a new motor from a new manufacturer. Sumax seems to be the latest new kid on the block in miniquad motors, and is coming out swinging with this high KV 2206. The motor is well made, the machining is high quality and the tolerances are excellent with a very tight air gap and no play in the bell. The bearings are very smooth and the motor turns very smoothly without being as notchy as some of the other modern motors. The standard integrated 5mm external and 4mm internal hollow shaft is held in place by a c-clip rather than a screw, which isn't necessarily a loss given the stripping problems many manufacturer's have been having with their retaining screws. I have a few minor complaints. The first is that the grip area around the base of the shaft that is supposed to grab on to the prop and keep from slipping is done with indentations instead of bumps, and is not effective at all. In changing through the sequence of props I found it difficult to get them locked down tightly. Related to this is the fact that the threaded secton of the shaft ends to high. A number of the props were shorter than the threaded area and needed a spacer to tighten down. My final complaint is the weight. Coming in at just over 32g, this motor is a bit heavy for a 2206 when there are a number of 2206 and even 2207 motors on the market that are lighter. Overall though, a very solid first entry into the market for Sumax, and I expect to see rapid improvements on the minor design issues as they progress.
Results
The results here were solid, though not quite up to par with some of the powerhouse motors we've been seeing on the market recently. It runs almost identically but sitting right between the ZMXv3/Returner R3 2600kv motor on the props that were tested the same, and the Force 2207 2700kv, though interestingly enough it gains a bit of efficiency over both across the board. Still some strong results, with numbers in the 1400g range on most of the heavy 5" props while staying in the mid 30A range, and easily breaking 1300g on even the dual blade and light tri 5" props staying in the low 30A range. Again, solid performance here with decent efficiency.
