- SunnySky X2207 2700kv
I've seen a lot of talk about the SunnySky 2207 series of motors, so I was glad when a supporter sent this one over as a loaner to test. Some interesting results form a motor that has been around for a while.
As always with SunnySky, the build quality on these motors is fantastic. The design is typically light weight yet strong, and the balance on and smoothness on the SunnkySky X series has always been nearly perfect. The weight on this one actaully surprisde me a bit, coming in at 34g. Not bad for a 2207, but definitely not as light as the X2204 was in its class. Still a solidly built motor. The airgap is fairly tight, but not nearly as narrow as some of the more modern motors. Unfortunately I wish the build quality was matched by performance.
Results
The first thing I noticed with these is that they are probably more balanced than any other motor I've had on my stand. You can hear the difference. Very smooth and almost no vibrations. The most interesting thing out of this test is that the actual KV on these seems to be closer to 2400kv than 2700kv. The second thing is that the magnets used in the motor appear to be quite weak, possibly N42SH. These are solidly two generations old motors in terms of design, if you consider Cobra motors the next generation, and the N52 based designs the current generation. The end result is that this motor is severly lacking in torque even given the 2207 stator size. The outcome is high current draw without many gains in terms of thrust. The N52 class 2205 high KV motors easily beat the thrust at approximately the same amp draw and significantly less weight. Current generation 2207s seem to generate significantly more thrust at about the same amps as well, and about the same weight class. As much as I want to find some redemption for this motor, given the current motors available I can't find a place where this would be an ideal selection. The biggest message here is really how far we've come in the last year! Fortunately SunnySky has come a long way since this motor and the new Edge series looks like they nailed the new market. I look forward to testing the more modern releases.
